Get out and about on the North Shore and beyond with our Seniors’ Hub programs!

MONDAYS: Capilano Mall shop, walk and socialize
12 pm - 1:30 pm

This weekly shopping program for seniors combines door-to-door transportation by our Hub Bus or volunteer drivers, to and from Capilano Mall. It is suitable for those too frail to walk alone who would like some assistance from our trained volunteers. The program combines shopping and gentle exercise, followed by a get-together for refreshments and socialization.

TUESDAYS: Capilano Mall and Save-on-Foods grocery shop

12 pm - 1:30 pm

This weekly shopping program for seniors combines door-to-door transportation with in-store assistance (if required) and social time. Seniors are picked up at their homes and taken by our Hub Bus to Capilano Mall with a stop at Save-On-Foods for those who wish to grocery shop. A team of volunteers provide assistance ranging from reading labels to lifting items off shelves. Assistance is available with carrying groceries from the bus to your door, if required.

This program is specifically for seniors within walking distance or who are able to get to the location by themselves, although transportation or an escort are provided for those attending for the first or second time. Volunteers help serve coffee and assist as needed. Join us for a relaxing afternoon of coffee and conversation.

THURSDAYS: Lower Capilano Social (second Thursday of the month)

2 pm – 4 pm

Approximately 50 seniors attend this popular monthly get-together, which features entertainment followed by a full sit-down afternoon tea, along with access to the DNV Express Library Service. The Social will be held in the Lions Gate Community Recreation Centre at 1771 Lions Gate Lane. Transportation can be arranged if required. This program provides an opportunity for seniors to meet and make new friends.

THURSDAYS: Peer group/Out-trips (fourth Thursday of the month)

Start and finish times for this program will be confirmed and communicated to participants two weeks prior to the out-trip. Please contact us by phone or email if you have any questions.

The Peer Group/Out-trips program helps keep seniors connected with each other and their community. Examples of activities may include concerts, movies, guest speakers, buffet restaurant lunches, scenic drives with special lunch stops, an annual traditional Garden Party, attending community events, and visits to local attractions including historic sites, farms, and more. If there’s something special that interests you - we welcome suggestions for activities. Transportation is provided by our Hub Bus and/or volunteer drivers.

Program Note:  July and August (second and fourth Thursday of the month)

In July and August, get out and about for a bit of an adventure, twice as often – on the second and fourth Thursday of the month! Meet and make new friends while enjoying visits to various attractions either locally or further afield. Activities are similar to those outlined above. Transportation is provided by our Hub Bus and/or volunteer drivers.

Annual Seniors and Family Harvest Lunch (fourth Thursday of October)

An occasion for seniors, their families and caregivers to learn more about the Seniors’ Hub programs and services, and meet the staff and volunteers of Capilano Community Service Society.

Telefriends

Our volunteers, many of whom are seniors themselves, make friendly reassuring phone calls to isolated or lonely seniors. We match volunteers with participants, who share mutual interests and concerns. This program provides additional opportunities for conversation and companionship.

Medical Ride Service

This service is to assist seniors who are unable to use public transit or the Go Bus and when HandyDart, family or friends are not available. Our volunteer drivers will accompany the senior from door-to-door, with further assistance to and from the medical waiting room. Volunteers are not allowed to attend appointments with patients. Please be aware that a minimum of 48-hours’ notice is required to fill requests for the medical ride service. Please also note that we currently only provide rides for appointments on the North Shore.
