We're here to HELP!

The Red Cross Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) offers the North Shore community a short-term loan of mobility and personal care aids to people of all ages who are recovering from surgery, illness or injury.

The Canadian Red Cross provides short-term loans (of less than six months) of medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, bath seats and benches, commodes and toilet seats, crutches and canes, and bed handles. The program alleviates the pressures that come along with injury or illness, assists with mobility issues, allows people to return home from hospital earlier and supports those in palliative care to spend their final days at home.

Equipment is provided on a first-come, first-served basis and is subject to availability. A referral form, from a regulated healthcare provider, is required for all equipment loans and should specify the equipment needed and any applicable measurements, including height and weight of equipment user. The client is responsible for arranging the collection and return of the equipment, clean and in good repair. The referral form for this service can be found at www.redcross.ca/bcreferral

Our HELP program has been deemed an essential service by the Red Cross and therefore remains OPEN weekdays at our office location: Mondays and Fridays from 9 am to 1 pm; and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 4 pm. Interested parties are advised to call first to check on the availability of required items.

This program is offered at no charge. The Red Cross provides the equipment, and Capilano Community Services staff recruits, trains and supports the volunteers who administer and deliver this service. The Red Cross gratefully accepts monetary donations which continue to support HELP. Every dollar you donate goes back into supporting the important work of the program, which in turn benefits you and your community. We will be happy to provide a tax receipt for your donation.

Access HELP

We have moved!

The Red Cross HELP depot is now open to the public at our new location, Lions Gate Community Recreation Centre, at 1733 Lions Gate Lane, North Vancouver, which is close to the intersection of Capilano Road and Marine Drive.

(The Red Cross HELP depot that was located at 600 West Queens Road is now permanently closed.)

To access the HELP Depot, enter the Lions Gate Community Centre underground parkade which is shared with Capilano Residences. The parkade entrance is accessed off Fullerton Avenue, half a block past Lions Gate Lane. A sign over the parkade entrance indicates Community Centre parking.

Once you have entered the parkade turn right and look for blue and red walls next to the entrance to the community centre. Designated short-term parking is available directly outside the HELP Depot. There are a limited number of parking stalls, which includes accessible parking and electric vehicle charging stations.
